Gilles Villeneuve

GILLES VILLENEUVE 1979

"Quick pit work proved crucial as Villeneuve gave Ferrari its second consecutive victory in the U.S. Grand Prix. He lost the engine during the morning warm-up but charged into the lead in the team’s back-up Ferrari 312T4 mastering the wet racing surface. As the track dried out, Alan Jones began to close in with the Saudia Williams FW07. Jones took the lead when Villeneuve pitted for slick tires. Two laps later, Jones pitted, but his stop was much slower. Compounding this was the fact that a worker failed to securely fasten a rear wheel, which later came off. Villeneuve then cruised to victory".
