1966 Glen 500

1966 Glen 500

Although rain slowed the 1966 Glen 500, this 310 mile event was not without drama. Bob Grossman’s Cobra 427 took an early lead and dominated the dry first half of the race. About 250 miles into the race, storm clouds gathered and the rain began.
In a memorable “David vs. Goliath” situation, the mighty Cobra’s lead dwindled as the Ray Caldwell / Sam Posey Porsche 904 gained through increasingly wet conditions. Soon, a torrential downpour enabled the nimble 904 to assume the lead. It was certainly a good day for Stuttgart as the #34 Carrera Speedster of John Kelly / Bob Bailey soldiered on and won its class.  Painted by artist, Robert Gillespie.
